This remarkable memorial to General Orde Wingate is now located at the Officers Club of the Assam Rifles in Shillong, Assam. The Assam Rifles HQ is in Shillong and comprise 46 Battalions. The Deputy Commander is a Major General: The Battalions are divided into nine sectors whose HQ is commanded by a Brigadier. All 11 Commanders are seconded from the Indian Army and are usually from the Gurkhas.  In October 1962 the Assam Rifles repelled the advance of the Chinese Army when it invaded Assam.
